What initially attracted you to community psychology?
I do not signify as a community psychologist. Applied social psychology is probably a more accurate description. I have been and continue to be drawn to the area via the work of people like Isaac Prilleltensky and Carolyn Kagan. Also, liberation psychology and its potential cross-over with Freirian pedagogy.

Please describe your current position.
My current role is as a Senior Lecturer (Critical Psychology) with The Victoria Institute, Victoria University, Australia. This is predominantly a research position and the aim of the Institute is to investigate issues and factors contributing to marginalisation in education sectors, particularly Melbourne's north-western corridor.

What other work have you been involved in as a community psychologist?
I worked as an educational psychologist for 8 years in schools in north Queensland. Prior to that, I worked as a prison psychologist for 2 years, again in north Queensland.

Please describe any other experiences (for example, mentors, professional development activities or further training) that helped you to prepare for a career in community psychology.
The first academic conference I presented at was 8th Trans Tasman Community Psychology Conference, held in Perth in 2002. It was a small conference but the people there were very engaging and supportive.

What are the most important things you learnt in the field (or in an academic setting) about community psychology?
That a person's mental health cannot be separated from the context in which they presently live and their life history.

Are there any other ways that you use your community psychology training and skills? If so, what are they?
I believe community psychology has much to offer education, particularly an understanding of pedagogy.

What are your research interests?
Transitions e.g. in personhood - our own and others ideas of who we are; in education and work; in relationships; located and cultural.
